Music History

A student of violin and guitar, Mary played in high school Chamber and
toured Manhattan playing, "Phantom of the Opera".  Chamber Choir
ensued the following year. Electric guitar lessons continued and in 1990,
her first album was complete, and by college 3 more amateur records
were recorded.

While at Texas A&M, Mary Shana DJ'd
KANM FM's Saturday radio show,
Psychogenic Fugue, and performed original guitar songs at campus
coffee houses. She became friends with and performed with the
grandson of the late Medal of Honor U.S. Air Force
General James
Doolittle.

Later, a chance meeting with local artist William Shostak (Glue Records,
Japan) at University of Michigan's  WCBN , Brendan Gillen's(BMG) radio
show, "Crush Collision," led to learning how to make techno. She
co-produced a project, and managed Glue for a year. In 1995, she
earned second recording engineering certification at the
Recording
Institute of Detroit  and did studio work under recording engineer, John
Vitale (Sponge, Republica). She was assistant engineer and created
sounds for a Carl Carlton re-mix at the
Harmonie Park Creative Group
studios in Detroit.  Later, she briefly worked on 3 of her tracks with the
legendary Carl Craig of
Planet E.

At University of Michigan-Dearborn's WUMD radio, Mary DJ's another
show, Interstellar Underground.  A 2001 internship under renown
promotions exec. Brent Battles with
Reprise Records/Warner Elektra
Atlantic provided a solid understanding of the music industry. That year,
Mary, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), and other record promo managers
judged bands at MGD's "Battle to the Bermuda Triangle" at Hayloft Liquor
Stand.

Currently, Mary produces music projects.

Artist Biography

     Live Show Journal

           1997 - ZOOT'S CAFE - Detroit, MI
People were so packed in that they were flowing out the front door
and hanging out on the stairway. This is the show that was
successfully promoted by the purple flyer with the nebula design.
Xyn
(Component Records) helped out with the sound system while I was
on stage. My set went well with few glitches and it reinforced to me
that on stage was where I felt at home the most.
1997 - PLANET GONG - Grand Rapids, MI
This was a real rock star road trip. Xyn, William Shostak (Glue
Records) and his girl, a friend from the Recording Institute of Detroit,
drove across the state to play with local artists, "On.". I remember
trying to tape down all of Xyn's wires on the floor because the kids
were dancing so close to his equipment. One of my tracks got the
kids...dancing.
1997 - THE GREEN ROOM - Ypsilanti, MI
It is a true MIRACLE that this show ever happened at all. This
particular day in the Ann Arbor, there were power failures due to a
storm that had moved through the area.  I had no way of running a
test rehearsal on my equipment, so I called up a friend and quickly
drove over to do set up and test. I did my test set through a pair of
cheap walkman headphones (doing a show and setting up is no
piece of cake, so you can imagine doing it twice in a five hour
period…) I wondered whether the club would have power, but I
decided to take a chance and show up. When I went on,  I got the
dance floor moving.
             1998 - ZOOT'S CAFE - Detroit, MI
It was good to play a set with local DJs spinning and a UR-affiliated
artist in the audience. This time, I learned the importance of being
centered before performing, as it took me a couple tracks to lock the
groove in. I played all new songs.
1998 - WCBN FM - Ann Arbor, MI
From the minute I walked into the station, I was ready to perform.
This is the same place I had met William, who got me into writing. It
was the place where artists like Carl Craig and Rich Hawtin had
spun their sets. Brendan Gillen interviewed me before my set...I told
him I wanted to be like Prince.

2004 - "BigDoings" at the Orr Ranch, MI
I got out the 12 string guitar and did some covers.  It helps to
remember the words when you perform...lessons learned. hehe!!
Came very close to performing for Eminem's producer.

The Silentscape is the intangible, parallel experience to the
sound when listening to music.
